Samsung M100S Video: 10+ Minutes Of Hands-On Footage

Earlier today we told you about the announcement of Samsung’s first Android Phone for the Korean market, the Samsung SHW-M100S running Android 2.1. Now a few videos of the device have popped up and they look rather promising – that display looks great!

Near the end of the first video they compare the iPhone to this device in terms of size and this looks MUCH chunkier than the iPhone. But then again, some people like that more bulbous, Palm-Pre-ish stone in your hand feel instead of a thin slate-like experience.

Thanks to eNuri.com for the videos!

The first Samsung Android Phone running Android 2.1, which also happens to be the first Samsung Android Phone for the home market of South Korea, has just been announced. Enjoy these pictures of the Samsung SHW-M100S which we’re hoping will get a cuter name when it is launched on SK Telecom in March:

As for the specs of the M100S:

  • 800MHz processor
  • 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen (WVGA)
  • 5MP camera with 720p video recording
  • Wi-Fi (802.11n)
  • GPS
  • T-DMB
  • DivX support
  • 3.5mm headphone jack
  • TouchWiz UI
  • Social Networking Service (SNS)
  • Android market
  • SK Telecom’s T store.

It looks pretty tasty… and promising Android 2.1 by March? Can’t argue with that! Unfortunately this might not make its way out of the Korean borders… we’ll see, more 2.1+ please!

Samsung’s 2.1 Powered M100S Debuts in South Korea [UPDATED]

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Samsung has announced another new Android handset, this one destined to stay back home in South Korea.   Like most everything else we’ve seen from the handset maker, it’s a touch-only phone.  Dubbed the SHW-M100S, this marks the first Android 2.1 to come from Samsung.

The specs are right in line with other recent Android handsets. It features a 3.7-inch AMOLED display, 5 megapixel camera with 720p support, WiFi (802.11n), GPS, T-DMB, DivX support, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. There’s an 800MHz processor under the hood and the UI is a new version of TouchWiz. Based on the few pictures we’ve seen so far, we’re fans of the evolved interface.  There’s no sign of any silly ‘cubes’ to be found!

Pricing has not been determined as of yet. Look for the M100S next month (March) on SK Telecom.

Samsung VP Commits Suicide

Monday, February 1st, 2010

For people like you and me, phones and gadgets are mostly (if not all) fun and games. The battle between smartphone powerhouses is an entertaining spectacle that, regardless of which company comes out on top, consumers always win. But for the people behind the scenes the picture isn’t always as pretty.

samsungA Samsung VP was recently found dead and apparently jumped out the window of his apartment in a successful suicide attempt. Some reports are saying the man, mentioned only as having the surname “Lee”, left a note in his apartment that stress at work led him to commit the act. That’s debateable:

YTN, a cable news network, quoted an unidentified Samsung representative as saying the deceased had recently been at odds with his peers over promotions.

YTN also quoted another insider as saying senior executives at Samsung had tried to keep the news of his death from becoming public.

An investigator said, “It has been confirmed that he suffered chronic depression caused by an excessive workload. As far as I know, he complained in his letter that his work was too tough to stand.”

If promotions and power are at play, police have to at least be CONSIDERING the possibility he was “pushed” out of the window – don’t they? I don’t have any evidence but it sounds like there is at least a POTENTIAL motive. Either way you look at it… a sad story regardless.

Lee was hired in the early 1990s by Samsung and worked in the memory chip division. In 2006 he won the “Samsung Fellow” award which is given annually to the company’s top engineer. Being a VP I’m sure this is a HUGE loss to Samsung and a blow to the morale of the company, but I’m sure those hurting the most are his family members. Sad, sad story…

Android 2.1 Plans “Going Very Well” for Sprint

Friday, January 29th, 2010

A member of the Sprint team took to their official message board to bring everyone up to speed in terms of their Android efforts.  As you may know, the carrier plans to update both their Samsung Moment as well as their Hero handsets to Android 2.1 at some point in the first half of the year.

A while back we announced our plans to update our Android devices to 2.1 in the first half of 2010. I just wanted to follow up with a quick status. The 2.1 update is currently being tested and things are going very well so far. We’re still targeting the first half of 2010 and if things continue to go smoothly we should have the update well within that time frame. I’m sure there will be a lot of questions about procedures and more exact time-frames but for now I won’t be able to say much more. I just wanted you all to know that things are still on track. – tooner (Sprint Employee)

We’re fans of companies who proactively reach out to their users and potential customers.  It’s nice to know what they’re working on and how things are progressing.  It’s that silent, ivory tower approach that turns people off and has them assuming that complaints fall on deaf ears.

Samsung Galaxy 2 Rumors Back in Action

Friday, January 29th, 2010

We first reported on a rumored Samsung Galaxy 2 back in early December.  At the time,  we only had a tweet to go by.  The specs included a 4-inch, 32GB device with Android 2.1 as the backbone.  Today we’re hearing a slightly different, if not fuller, list of specs – 1GHz Snapdragon chip, 3.7-inch AMOLED display, 5 megapixel cam, Android 2.1, and 32GB internal storage.

A 3.7-inch AMOLED screen would, in theory, have it looking as sharp as the one found on the Nexus One.  The 32GB of memory would put it at double that found in the Motorola Droid and considerably higher than what most Android phones come with.

The picture you see above is not real.  It’s only a render put together to show how a Galaxy 2 could look.  It’s fairly obvious to us that the screen image itself was taken from that found on the Nexus One page.  Notice the icons, widget and notification bar? Still, we like the design nonetheless!

Samsung Galaxy 2 Picture Leaks, Announcement In February?

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

The Mobile World Congress is right around the corner in Barcelona and it looks to be a great event for Android lovers. One device that COULD be announced if the rumors fall graciously into place is the Samsung Galaxy 2 of which a picture/render just leaked:

samsung-galaxy2

That’s a good looking device and if you ask me, looks polished enough that it’s probably not a fanboy render photochop job. We also got a list of potential specs for the device:

  • 1 GHz Snapdragon
  • 3.7 inch AMOLED touchscreen
  • 5 MP camera
  • 32 GB internal memory
  • Android 2.1
  • 3.5 mm jack

As Engadget points out, the Snapdragon processor is a Qualcomm creation and Samsung creates its own chips so this is a possible point of contention. Probably just an oversight by Androphones (or their tipster) but one worth mentioning.

China: We Won’t Limit Android

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

Fears that Android handsets might not find their way into China have been calmed.  Reuters is reporting today that China will not try to limit use of Android.  So long as the platform complies with Chinese law, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology spokesman Zhu Hongren said China would not place limits.

Two handsets were scheduled to be launched last week on China Unicom’s network but were delayed over the cyber-attack/Cold War between Google and China.  As of now, no announcements have come from Google, Motorola, or Samsung as to when we’ll see them.
