Apple Outlaws Mentions Of Android In App Store

So you’ve got an application that isn’t ONLY available on the iPhone – it could be on Android, WebOS, WinMo, BlackBerry and other platforms. In your “description” you may want to let users know, and heck, maybe you got an award or something in one of the platforms and want to show users you’re product is noteworthy. Sound fair? Not according to Steve Jobs.

If it’s Android you want to mention you better think again. Flash Of Genius, developers of an app called SAT Vocab 2.2, have had the following description in the iPhone App Store:

They have just posted (on their blog) a letter they received from Apple suggesting they remove the mention of Google Android or else have their app removed from the App Store:

Dear Flash of Genius, LLC,

Thank you for submitting Flash of Genius: SAT Vocab 2.2 to the App Store.  During our review of your application, we found that your application contains inappropriate or irrelevant platform information in the Application Description and/or Release Notes sections.

Providing future platform compatibility plans or other general platform references are not relevant in the context of the iPhone App Store.  While your application has not been rejected, it would be appropriate  to remove “Finalist in Google’s Android Developer’s Challenge!”  from the Application Description [Emphasis added].

Please log into iTunes Connect to make appropriate changes to the Application Description now to avoid an interruption in the availability of Flash of Genius: SAT Vocab 2.2 on the iPhone App Store.

Regards,

iPhone Developer Program

Apple definitely has the right to do this… it just seems… overly defensive. Doesn’t it make them seem scared of Google and Android? Perhaps they should be! Meanwhile Flash Of Genius are just wondering how they can leverage their success on Android to show iPhone users they should give the software a shot!

braveheartI’m severely doubting Google cares whether or not you mention Apple or any other competitors in the Android Market. Do whatever the heck you want!

You can take our description… but you cannot take… OUR FREEEEEEEEEEEDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM

SPOILER ALERT: Nexus One Beats iPhone 3GS in CNET Prizefight [VIDEO]

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Over the last few years, many phones have been thrown in a head-to-head matchup with Apple’s iPhone.  We’ve yet to see a device come along and dethrone the current king of smart phones.  At some point, something has to be considered better, right?

Along comes the Nexus One.

Will the new Android superphone be able to knock out the seemingly unbeatable iPhone 3GS?  Well, if you read the headline of this post coming in, you know it does. CNET released their latest “Prizefight” yesterday and it shows our beloved Android winning the battle.  Check out the video below!

Opinions From an Apple & Google Fanboy

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

There has been plenty of spilled ink (and pixels) surrounding products released over the past few years by Google and Apple with both putting   out game changers or a iWhatever killers.  A perceived rift may be becoming a reality.  As both an Apple and Google fanboy, I am saddened by a situation that doesn’t seem as if it will ever get better.

I really like what both companies are doing even if they have their respective issues.  Nobody is perfect. I will list a few of the things I like and don’t, you can perfectly disagree with the following statements and share your point of view in a comment.

  • Apple has a great OS: Mac OS X. It can be simple if you don’t want to know how it works but you can also have access to Terminal and the power of Unix.
  • Google has a great email service: Either Gmail or with Google Apps (only online and not through pop3 or imap on a client). I think this is the next step of evolution for email: huge storage accessible whatever device you are using, labels and not folders, powerful search.
  • Apple is controlling: Apple, or maybe just Steve Jobs, think they know exactly what consumers want and what they don’t need. Apparently, we don’t need Blu-ray drive in high-end computers or camera on a tablet.
  • Google is slow: Like any large companies, everything takes time. They have to evaluate everything and this process take time. Sometime I wish they change things as fast as they can give search results. When will we be able to buy Android apps in more countries?

However they share a lots and worked together in the past. Google is still providing web search and maps for Apple products and even if Apple would like to change the situation, it will not be easy and quick.

Now, how can someone can be both an Apple and Google fans. The logic would say that if you own a Mac computer, you will own an iPhone. If you compare Android OS and Mac OS X they have tons of similarity:

-Menu bar in OS X and Notification Bar in Android: You’ll get the time here, your network status, battery status… all in the same place.

-Dock and Slider bar: These are very similar concept, you click or drag and you will see icons of all your apps.

-Terminal/root: On both systems you can use the stock interface as it is or you can customize and improve it. I have Path Finder to replace the Finder on my Mac and a MoDaCo ROM on my HTC Hero.

-WebKit: Safari on OS X and Android browser are based on the same open source engine used to render web pages.

I could add few more but the point is that Mac OS X and Android have a lot more in commun than Mac OS X and the iPhone (or iPad to be trendy). So, for an Apple/Google fanboy the logical choice is to own an Android phone that you will be able to use like you are using you Mac OS X computer. Would you agree?

Steve Jobs Flips Out, Goes On Anti-Android/Adobe Tirade

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Steve Jobs is feeling the heat. In some cases an executive might play the calm, cool and collected gameface, allowing a sense of confidence to convince the masses that yeah, this dude is in control. But not Jobs. At an employee conference/event he was asked about Google and Adobe and went on a tirade that spewed venomous insults at each.

steve-jobs-hates-google

On Google:

On Google: We did not enter the search business, Jobs said. They entered the phone business. Make no mistake they want to kill the iPhone. We won’t let them, he says. Someone else asks something on a different topic, but there’s no getting Jobs off this rant. I want to go back to that other question first and say one more thing, he says. This don’t be evil mantra: “It’s bullshit.” Audience roars.

Cry me a river. Apple has only been in the phone business for a few years, it isn’t like they’re veterans of the game. He sounds like he has stuck some flag in the ground that provides Apple claim to the phone throne for all of eternity. And regardless, company’s are free to enter new markets. If you don’t think Google and Android have something to do with the recent explosion of phone capabilities/excitement than you’ve got to be on crack.

Google doesn’t want to kill the iPhone – they don’t need to do that. Plus it’s good to have Apple around because competition fuels innovation and Apple certainly has some great ideas. As far as the “Don’t Be Evil” thing? Attacking Google just makes Jobs seem like a nervous wreck that is backed into a corner by the recent iPad debacle.

He doesn’t save ALL of his hatred for Google, he hooks up Adobe with some of that:

About Adobe: They are lazy, Jobs says. They have all this potential to do interesting things but they just refuse to do it. They don’t do anything with the approaches that Apple is taking, like Carbon. Apple does not support Flash because it is so buggy, he says. Whenever a Mac crashes more often than not it’s because of Flash. No one will be using Flash, he says. The world is moving to HTML5.

Ouch. By the way, some people are reporting that Jobs actually said, “Don’t be evil is a load of crap.” I’m not sure if one would prefer crap to bullshit or vice versa, but neither is very nice.

Alright Android fans… if you could provide a 1-sentence rebuttal to Mr. Steve Jobs and Apple, what would you say to him?
